Vacuum Cast Impellers

Precision and Performance

At Aurora Metals Division, we take pride in our expertise in producing geometrically consistent impellers for the centrifugal pump market. Our vacuum casting process puts us at the forefront of the industry, particularly for non-leaded brass and bronze impellers. This advanced technique, combined with our commitment to superior quality and service, has allowed us to continually expand our market share in both open and enclosed shrouded impeller segments.

Tooling and Design

Our tooling for the vacuum process consists of a metal vacuum die and metal core equipment, available in either straight blade or francis blade designs. We offer a customer-friendly policy where the initial vacuum die cost is a one-time expense, with all subsequent maintenance and replacement being Aurora Metals' responsibility, excluding design revisions.

The Vacuum Casting Advantage

Our vacuum casting process offers numerous benefits that set our impellers apart:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: Smooth internal waterways increase pump efficiency, optimizing performance.
  • Consistent Tolerances: Our process ensures uniform waterway tolerances, crucial for reliable operation.
  • Minimal Machining: The precision of our metal dies means that machining areas typically require only 0.030" of material removal to achieve finished size.
  • Precision Shroud Thickness: Shrouds are cast to size, eliminating the need for additional machining.
  • Reduced Balancing Time: Concentric tooling design along with even material distribution and lack of voids result in impellers that often require less time for balancing when compared to less accurate molding processes.
  • Dimensional Consistency: Our process allows for repeatable dimensions, maximizing the effectiveness of CNC machining and minimizing finishing work.

Precision Tolerances

We maintain tight tolerances to ensure the highest quality:

  • +/- .015 under 1” plus .002” per inch over 1”, not considering parting line
  • Tolerance capabilities may vary based on die contours and sections

Alloy Options

We offer a range of non-leaded formulated alloys to suit various applications:

1. Silicon Brass (C.D.A. Ref. No. 875 and 876):

    • Ideal for fresh water to mildly brackish applications

2. Aluminum Bronze (C.D.A. Ref. No. 953):

  • Suitable for harsher environments

3. Nickel Aluminum Bronze (C.D.A. Ref. No. 958):

  • Designed for extreme conditions, from polluted water to salt water

Quality Assurance

Every impeller undergoes rigorous quality control checks:

  • Dimensional inspection using advanced CMM technology
  • Material composition verification

Vacuum Casting Process

Our proprietary vacuum casting process involves several key steps:

  • Mold Preparation: The metal die is carefully prepared and coated with a specialized release agent.
  • Vacuum Creation: The die is sealed, and a vacuum is created to remove air and gases from the mold cavity.
  • Metal Injection: Molten brass or bronze alloy is introduced into the die under controlled pressure.
  • Solidification: The metal is allowed to cool and solidify, ensuring minimal porosity.
  • Ejection and Finishing: The cast impeller is ejected from the die and undergoes minimal finishing processes.

Applications

Our vacuum cast impellers find applications in various industries:

  • Water treatment and distribution
  • Chemical processing
  • Oil and gas
